ESSENTIAL DRIVER TRAINING (EDT)
EDT programme was introduced by the Road Safety Authority in Ireland to ensure that all new drivers to our roads receive a minimum number of driving lessons by a professional driving instructor. Essentially you need to undertake a minimum number of 12 driving lessons with a registered and approved driving instructor. However, the required minimum of 12 lessons do not necessarily cover the complete teaching syllabus, to pass the driving test, this EDT is designed as a "minimum requirement" . In addition to professional lessons it is advised to do practice lessons in-between. This extra practice is normally undertaken with a ‘sponsor’ (usually a family member) If none is available to you, we can act as your sponsor driver in between your EDT lessons.
Please Note: In order to attend and undertake a driving test you must have a completed, signed and uploaded logbook to the RSA portal by an approved driving instructor prior to their driving test. Shortened EDT Programme There is an exception to the above rule for fully licensed foreign drivers. A reduced or shorter EDT programme was introduced in Jan 2019 for fully licensed foreign drivers from countries with which Ireland does not have a driving licence exchange agreement. These drivers are required to take a minimum of 6 lessons before undergoing the driving test, please see RSA website for up-to-date information. |
